Are you sick?!

October 20, 2017 by

I woke up this morning not feeling like my normal self. There was pressure behind my eyes, and my nose was beginning to feel stuffy. The back of my throat was a little sore and scratchy. I knew something was coming. My body was telling me for sure. I pulled myself out of bed and trudged into the bathroom to the medicine cabinet. I knew I’d better find something to start fighting it off or tomorrow would find me in even worse shape. Whatever “it” was: a head cold, the flu, sinusitis- I knew it was going to drag me down. I know you know the feeling all too well. You kind of panic because it’s already happening, and it’s too late to completely dodge the bullet, so to speak. How bad is it going to be, you wonder? You tell yourself you just can’t be sick because you have too much to get done, as if wishing it out loud would make the symptoms disappear. But you can’t fight what’s coming with wishes or words.

Sometimes life hits us in the same way as a sickness hits our body. Perhaps you get a notice in the mail, a check bounced, or you hear a rumor that makes you sick to your stomach. That dark, dreaded, stomach-in-knots kind of thing that grips you and holds on. What can you do about it? Nothing.  The only thing you can do is deal with it. Live with it. Pray it doesn’t get any worse. These can be small things, but the way you handle them determines how you’ll handle the big things that life throws at you.

Whether the problem is a head-cold or a major tragedy, the way you choose to face the facts and navigate them, is how well you’re going to “weather the storm.” Lying in bed and feeling sorry for yourself isn’t going to help you get rid of a cold. Getting up, showering, taking some good, safe medicine, and rest, will help you get back to normal soon. So it is with the major troubles we face in life; we can’t pull the covers over our heads and ignore the facts. We have to be smart, and face the problem head on. Knowledge is power they say. We must educate ourselves about whatever the crisis is, be strong, stay positive, and move forward.

Whatever battle you’re fighting- big or small, short or long, be wise my friends and take care of yourselves.
