Making Decorative Paper Flowers

July 17, 2021 by

I have a super cute project for you today! I’m making decorative paper flowers that are easy to do and can be used in many different ways!

I love using old book pages and sheet music in my crafting! This project is a perfect way to incorporate some of my favorite things into my decor. Making decorative paper flowers is super fun and you can make them out of just about any paper you want. You can add the finished flowers to dress up several items.

Just to name a few I’ve used them on picture frames, pallet signs, gift tags, cards, decorative books, journals, and as magnets. I’m sure there are 100 other ways you can use them too! In the video below I show you a few different ways to make these adorable flowers and I give you some tips and tricks too.

Making decorative paper flowers

Making Decorative Paper Flowers

When you watch the video you will see that there are a few different ways to make these adorable flowers. You can use a paper punch to get perfectly shaped flowers. Or you can cut your own petals like I do. I love to sit in front of the TV and cut a whole bunch of heart shaped petals and then I’m all set when I’m ready to craft!

If you like to use the punched out flowers you will want to give them some lift. That way they aren’t just laying flat on you. To do that, I use a modeling clay tool that has balls on the end. I lay my petals on a piece of old flip flop and push the tool into the petals to give them some dimension.

What Paper to use and Flower Center Options

Like I said, I like to use old book pages and sheet music for most of my flowers. But you can make them out of anything you like. Just make sure that the paper isn’t too brittle because you don’t want it to rip. I’ve used coffee filters, wrapping paper, and card stock in the past and I always love the results!

If you are using card stock you can keep a water mister on hand and spray those petals to make them more workable. Card stock is much thicker than regular paper and it can be hard to manipulate without the water. It looks great as a flower though!

When it comes to deciding on the center of your flowers, the sky is the limit! I love using buttons for mine or pieces of vintage jewelry. You could also use cotton balls, raffia, and any cute little bit of something that you have. In the video I also show you how to make cute little rosettes that make great flower centers too!

Supply List

  • Variety of cardstock and old book pages/sheet music
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Buttons, old jewelry, etc. to be your flower centers

Step by Step Instructions

  • Start by using your scissors to cut out hearts from your papers. You want the bottom of the heart (where the point normally is) to be cut flat. Your hearts don’t need to be perfect in any way!
  • Once you have several hearts cut out, add a line of hot glue to the bottom of about three of them. By the time you have added the glue to your third one, the first should be cool enough to work with. Scrunch up the bottom and the glue will hold it in place. Repeat this process until you have as many petals as you need.
  • Next, take one of your petals that are still flat and lay it in front of you. Use the hot glue to start attaching one of your scrunched petals at a time until you have the original petal all filled in and it looks like a flower. Once all of your petals are in place, flip the flower over and trim off any parts of your base petal that might show through to the front.
  • Now go back in and add another smaller layer of petals. You can stop here with the petals or you can add as many more layers as you want. You can also cut small leaves from your paper and add those in too!
  • Once your petals are all in place, glue a button or piece of old jewelry to the middle to make your flower center.

The Wrap Up…

I really hope that you love these paper flowers as much as I do! There are so many ways to make them and so many ways to use them. You can make cute little ones, big and beautiful ones, or a mix of both. The flowers I showed you how to make today can be used any day of the year. But think of the beautiful creations that you could make out of old Christmas cards or thick Christmas wrapping paper! Learning how to make the flowers is just the beginning, your creativity will take over and you’ll come up with tons of new ideas. Have fun crafting, friends!

DIY Pallet Board Arrangement

July 11, 2021 by

Today I’m sharing a project that is a little out of my comfort zone. I am making a DIY pallet board floral arrangement. I’m really happy with the way it turned out so I wanted to share this project with you!

You know that most of my projects are vintage but this DIY pallet board arrangement is a little different! It still has a rustic feel but I’m not adding any of the vintage flare that I normally do. This project is an example of one of the bonus projects that I do from time to time in my membership group, Tami’s Making! In that group I do at least 3 exclusive vintage crafting tutorials a month. And sometimes I sneak in another tutorial like this one. The really fun thing about this group is that, when you join, you have access to all the past video tutorials I’ve done. You’d be able to check out the video for this project too!

DIY Pallet Board Arrangement

There is a reason that pallet board projects are so popular. The boards give any project a fun rustic feel! Get your hands on a pallet and you have the supplies for tons of fabulous projects. Some of the pallet wood already has a variety of colors and different levels of distress. If your pallet seems a little too clean and new though, you can always rough it up a bit before you get started.

You can use a hammer and a light hand to bang up your boards a little if you like. And, a few different shades of stain (messily applies) could help mimic the look that I have here on my boards. It’s up to you how you want your boards to look and often they already look great when you get them!

About this Arrangement

This project was inspired by similar pallet board arrangements that I made for a wedding shower a few years back. The shower had a garden theme so I made little burlap seed bags to add into the arrangements. Someone saw the arrangements on my Facebook page and wanted me to make one for her so I decided to show the gals in my group how to make them. For this new arrangement, I used flowers that I already had on hand. You can use any flowers that you have or ones that you buy specifically for this project. I used a few different hydrangeas, some ivy, and a few wispy florals. Then I added some raffia and burlap to finish things off. I really love the way it turned out and hope you do too!

Supply List

Start with a larger flower and then work your way out from that.
  • 4 Pallet boards cut to 24″
  • 2 Pallet boards cut to 13″
  • Drill and screws
  • Artificial flowers of your choice
  • Small greenery
  • Raffia
  • White burlap
  • Burlap ribbon
  • Paper towel
  • Sharpie
  • Glue gun
  • Wire cutters
  • Staple gun

Step by Step Instructions

  • Start by assembling your pallet boards. Lay the 24″ boards out next to each other and then lay your 13″ boards at either end and use a drill and screws to secure them in place. Flip your boards over and you’re ready to craft!
  • Now start adding your flowers. Use the wire cutters to trim any stems that are too long. You can also trim large flowers into smaller sections. Use a glue gun to secure them in place and then a staple gun to make sure they don’t move. Start with a larger flower and then work your way out from that. Add in different heights and textures of florals as you go.
Add in some wispy flowers to add more variety and dimension.
  • Next, pull out some raffia strings and fold them in half a couple of times. Grab the loop at one end and add hot glue to it. Then stick it right down into your arrangement. From there you can pull the raffia up and through your arrangement.
  • Cut a rectangle of the burlap or rustic fabric to make a “seed bag”, then fray the edges. Put a few wadded up sheets of paper towel onto the fabric and then fold it in half to make a bag. Use the hot glue gun to secure it in place.
  • Then, cut a small piece of your burlap ribbon and use the black Sharpie to write “seeds” on it. Use hot glue to attach this to your bag.
Add in some splashes of color!
  • Next, cut a strip of the burlap ribbon. Add a line of hot glue at the center and cinch the ribbon to make sort of a bow. Then use hot glue to add it to your arrangement. Frey the edges a little bit.

Raffia adds to the rustic feel and gives dimension to the arrangement.

The Wrap Up…

There are so many different ways to make this project your own. You can either match the colors in your home or go for a more neutral look instead. Adding in burlap and raffia gives a rustic look but you could also use ribbons and/or lace and get something completely different. I hope you have as much fun with this project as I did, I’d love to see what you come up with!

Making a Succulent Topiary

July 5, 2021 by

I am so excited to share this adorable project with you today! I’m making a succulent topiary out of an embroidery hoop and and candle stick and the results are fabulous! I can’t wait for you to see it!

I know that many of you are like me and love using succulents in your decor. Making a succulent topiary is a fantastic way to add beauty to any room. Add a little lace and some skeleton keys and your topiary also gets a vintage feel. And you know that’s a must for me!

I also think the embroidery hoop adds to the vintage look too. I envision our grandmothers and great-grandmothers stitching away at something gorgeous while the little ones are playing quietly at their feet. I don’t know why but I always imagine the little ones of old as so well behaved. I’m sure our fore-mothers would be quick to burst my imaginative bubble but that’s what I always think of! Whatever embroidery hoops and succulents make you think of, I hope this project brings you as much joy as it has brought me.

Making a Succulent Topiary

Succulents are so popular these days and I’m so glad that so many people are appreciating their beauty. I love them in my own home and know that many of you do too. If you sell your handmade items online or at craft shows. This could be a great project to add to your product lineup! The fact that these are done in all neutral colors makes them great to sell at shows because they work with just about any home color scheme.

Another thing that I love about this project is that these look amazing outdoors! And, they hold up really well. I’ve had one outside for several seasons (including the snow) and it still looks fabulous. I wouldn’t add any of your pretty lace to one that you put outside but everything else does great in the elements.

The Magic Formula for Making Arrangements

When you watch the video below, you will hear me talk about my magic formula for any floral arrangement. What you need to have is a thriller, a spiller, and a filler. The thriller is your focal point, the thing that will stand out the most. Either a pretty flower or a well textured succulent will do the trick. Your spiller is the piece that will spill over the side of your arrangement to give it varied height and pull the whole project together. And, your filler is just like it sounds. The more neutral pieces that will fill in around your thriller and spiller. No matter what type of arrangement you are doing, keep this formula in mind and it will turn out beautifully!

If you are new to making arrangements don’t be scared! I always advise using hot glue to secure your greenery in place but you don’t have to glue it all down right away. What you can do is arrange things first and then go back and glue afterward. That way, if you don’t like something, you can just pull it back out and try something else!

Succulent Topiary Supply List

  • Succulents
  • Farmhouse type candlestick (with a wide top and base)
  • Mosses (I used Spanish moss and a mix of green mosses)
  • Large embroidery hoop
  • Styrofoam block
  • Small piece of lace
  • Skeleton keys
  • Leafy greenery like wisteria or ferns
  • Hot glue gun
  • Exacto knife
  • Wire cutters

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Start by cutting you Styrofoam block to fit the size of your candlestick. I left mine hanging over the sides just a little bit.
  2. Next, separate the two parts of your embroidery hoop. Tighten down the one with the screw and then slip the other one inside of it crosswise. Use hot glue to secure it in place.
  3. Now use the knife to start cutting out ridges in our foam that your embroidery hoop can sit down in. Then put hot glue down into your ridges and place your hoops on top of it to secure them to the foam block.
  4. Then add hot glue to the bottom of your hoops and secure them to your candle stick.
  5. Now choose the succulents that you want to use and start adding them into your foam block. Use the wire cutters to trim down any stems that are too long and then put hot glue on the stems before sticking them into the foam.
  6. Add your piece of lace down and then stick your “spiller” succulent in on top of it.
  7. Tie your skeleton keys onto a strip of jute string or leather (or whatever you want!) and then secure them in place over your lace.
  8. Then continue filling in with your other succulents. Add in your greenery where you think the arrangement needs softening up or additional height.
  9. Next use the moss to fill in any holes and to cover the sides of your foam block. I started with a base of Spanish moss and then add in the green mosses on top. Use the hot glue to secure them in place.

The Wrap Up…

Oh friends, I hope you love this topiary project as much as I do! I had so much fun making it and love the way it looks in my home. I shared the link to the succulents that I used in the recipe above but you can use any kind that you like! You could even paint your embroidery hoop if you wanted it to match a certain area of your house. The neutral color of the hoop works perfectly for my decor but you could dress it up however you want! Whatever you end up using, I hope you enjoy the process and results as much as I have!

Making Vintage Tissue Jars

June 26, 2021 by

I can’t wait to share this adorable project with you, friends! Today I am making vintage tissue jars out of mason jars and pretty vintage items. I absolutely love the way they came out and I think you will too!

One of the things you may notice about this tutorial is that it doesn’t have a video like most of my blog posts do. The reason for that is that this adorable vintage tissue jar project is one that I did a few years ago in my membership group, Tami’s Making. I can’t link the video here because it was posted in the membership group and it can only be watched there. Since it’s been a few years since I shared it in that group, I thought it would be ok to share it with you now. That way you can see an example of some of the fun projects I teach people how to make each month! In the group, I do at least 3 exclusive video tutorials every month. And, you also have access to all the tutorials that I’ve done since I started the group in 2019! So, for example, you could easily find the video of me making these vintage tissue jars. I’d love it if you would come craft with us!

Making Vintage Tissue Jars

One of the things that you should know about this beautiful project is that no two tissue jars will be the same. And I absolutely love that! In the instructions below, I explain exactly how to make one of these pretties. But, the way yours looks will depend on the things that you have on hand to work with. For instance, I wrapped my jar in a lace sleeve that had been cut from a vintage dress. The chances of you having or finding one of those are probably not great. But you will have/find other beautiful pieces of fabric or lace that you can use! Just like the antiques that we love, no two tissue jars will be the same.

Design Variations

Ok here’s where things can get really interesting! I know that many of you are vintage lovers like me and will want to give your tissue jars a vintage look. But you don’t have to! If you want to give these as gifts or sell them at a craft show, you can make them to suit lots of different decor styles. Just choose fabrics and ribbons that will compliment each other and go to town! Farmhouse decor is very popular and so are polka dots, you could absolutely make tissue jars to match.

Lid Variations

Figuring out how to get the whole in the lid for the tissue to come out was my only struggle with this project. For the first one I left the circular part of the canning lid and popped a whole in it using a short screw driver and a hammer. Then I started using my little gray cells and came up with some better options! I ended up going with sheet music to cover a piece of cardboard cut to fit my lid. I give you those instructions in the step by step below. But you could also use fabric like burlap or muslin.

To do that, trace the circular part of your lid onto cardboard and then cut it out. Cut a square of muslin or burlap that you will be able to fold over the edges of the cardboard to cover it. Use the tape to secure it in place and then cut a whole out for your tissue. You may want to cut the hole in the cardboard before you cover it and then trace the hole onto your fabric and cut that out. Then, line up your holes before taping the fabric in place. That will probably give you a cleaner cut than trying to cut through them both at the same time.

Supply List

  • Quart sized canning jar with lid (wide mouth)
  • Material or lace to cover the jar
  • Muslin or burlap to cover your jar lid
  • Lace/tatting (I used two different kinds on my jar. I used tatting for the neck and a smaller type for the lid)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Spray adhesive (optional)
  • Paint for your lid (I used cream chalk paint)
  • Scissors
  • Small piece of cardboard
  • Mod Podge
  • Paint brush
  • Small vintage embellishments (like keys, buttons, jewelry, craft pearls, etc…)
  • Tubular container of tissue

Step by Step Instructions

  • Paint both parts of your lid in the color of your choice. I used cream chalk paint for mine.
  • Cut your material to fit the outside of the jar. Don’t cover the area where the lid screws on. Use spray adhesive and/or hot glue to attach the material around the body of the jar.
  • Next, cut your lace to fit around the neck of the jar and use the hot glue to secure it in place.
  • Now cut a piece of your smaller lace and use hot glue to wrap it around the lid.
  • Trace the circular part of your lid onto a piece of cardboard. Then trace it onto an old book page or sheet music. Cut both of your circles out and then use the Mod Podge to adhere the book page to the cardboard piece. Once it is dry, cut out the whole for your tissue to come through.
  • Next, pull your tissue out of its original container and put it into your jar. Put your lid on the jar and then add any embellishments that you are using. I made a small bow with a piece of lace I had and then used a piece of ribbon width lace to tie a pretty key to mine.

The Wrap Up…

I had a lot of fun making these tissue jars! And I loved sharing it with the ladies in Tami’s Making. I tried to include as many tips and tricks here as I could remember. If you are part of our membership group, though, you’ll have access to the video tutorials where I share my whole process and all the extra info you need. I hope you have fun making these vintage tissue jars and that you will join us in the membership group! You can pop in and out as often as you want so you can give it a try for a month and see what you think. Hope to see you there!

How to Make a Patriotic Ribbon Flag

June 18, 2021 by

We are almost to the full days of summer and the 4th of July! I love this time of year and really enjoy getting our my patriotic decor. Today I’m sharing one of my favorite summer craft projects: how to make a patriotic ribbon flag that is simply adorable!

We Americans truly love to celebrate Independence Day and our flag. I know that patriotism can be found all around the world but there is something so exciting and unifying about seeing all the patriotic decor going up around us. All through the summer I see our flag and its colors displayed proudly and in many fun ways. I really loved how this patriotic ribbon flag turned out and I wanted to share it with you so you can make your own in time for the 4th! All you need is a dowel rod, some hot glue, and any fabric and ribbons that you love. No sewing needed (you guys know I don’t sew!), just some layering that is lots of fun to do!

How to Make a Patriotic Ribbon Flag

This is a such a great craft to make for yourself and it’s also a great one to do if you sell your handmade items. You could easily make these in batches which would make them quick pieces to produce. You could sit in front of the tv and tear all your fabric and then just go to town gluing your layers onto your dowels. Once you have your base of fabric you could add different ribbons, lace, and other embellishments so that they are all unique and could appeal to different people at your craft shows. Patriotic decor is always a hot seller, especially in the summer time. Like I said, we all love to display our stars and stripes!

Design Variations

You know that I love my decor to be vintage or, at least, to have a more rustic/vintagey feel. So, for my flag I chose fabrics and ribbons that have the rustic shades of red, white, and blue. I also added some craft pearls and buttons to add to the vintage feel. You can make your flag similar to mine if you like it, or you can take it in a completely different direction. If you prefer your patriotic decorations to have bright and vibrant colors you can definitely use those instead.

You can also use as many (or as few) embellishments as you want. I pulled out a whole bunch of stuff that I thought I might want to use for my flag and just stopped adding when I thought it was in danger or looking like “too much”. You could add so many different things to the area with your red and white stripes. And, you could also add little bits and bobs to the ends of some of your fabric or ribbon strips. I just wanted to give you a starting point and show you how to assemble the flag. The rest is up to you!

Supply List

  • Fabric ( I used blue with white stars and red and white with stars)
  • Lace (optional)
  • Red Hug Snug seam binding
  • Variety of ribbon in patriotic colors
  • Craft pearls
  • Pompom ribbon
  • Blue buttons (optional)
  • Dowel rod (I got a regular dowel at Hobby Lobby and cut it in half)
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun

Step by Step Instructions

  • Cut your blue fabric at 10.5″ x 17.5″. Then cut that piece of fabric in half. Next, make slits with your scissors every 1/2 inch and then tear the fabric into strips.
  • For the red and white fabric, cut a piece that is 21″ by 17″, cut a slit every half inch along the shorter side of the fabric and then tear it into strips.
Add your first layer of fabric strips
  • Now use the hot glue gun to attach one end of your red strips to the entire length of the dowel rod. You want the dowel to be the front of your flag so the glue is hidden in the back. To do this, make sure you are putting the glue on the good side of your fabric, that way when you glue it on the dowel, the dowel will be the front and the good side of the fabric will face forward.
  • Next, cut your red Hug Snug into strips and then use the hot glue to attach them evenly in between some of your fabric strips.
  • Now cut strips of your red and/or white ribbons, pompom ribbon, and the craft pearls and add those in evenly across the dowel.
Cut your lace and ribbon and add them in
  • Next, go back in and add another whole row of fabric strips behind your ribbon layer.
  • Then cut your lace and/or ribbon into strips and add it like you did the other pieces. Use the colors you think you need, maybe more white, maybe more white to make it look like flag stripes.
  • Now add your blue strips to the corner of your dowel to make the blue and star portion of your flag. Then add a second layer.
  • Next, cut a strip of ribbon a little longer than the length of your dowel rod and use the hot glue to attach it, wrapping it around the ends of the dowel to cover them. This will cover all of the spots where you glued your layers and give it a finished look.
Add another full layer of fabric strips
  • Now hot glue your blue buttons to your finishing ribbon, above your blue strips of fabric. I also added some smaller white buttons inside the blue buttons since mine were flower shaped.
  • Finally, use some of your fabric or ribbon to make a hanger for your flag.

I really love how this flag turned out, friends! I had so many ideas of different things that I could add that I can’t wait to make another one. Don’t mind me if I have several hanging in and out of the house! I hope you give this project a try and love it as much as I do. Happy crafting, friends!

How to Decorate Bottles with Book Pages

June 14, 2021 by

I have a great project for you today, friends! And there’s a good chance that you already have everything you need for it on hand. I’m teaching you how to decorate bottles with book pages and they look absolutely adorable when they are done!

I absolutely love displaying old books in my home. I just love everything about them. Probably because of that, one of my favorite things to craft with are old book pages. It’s a great way to bring the inside of an old book out into the light! I’m excited for you to learn how to decorate bottles with book pages so you can enjoy them in your own home.

I’m using those cute little syrup bottles from Cracker Barrel but you can use any bottle that you have on hand. Or, you could ask the restaurant to save you a few. I’m lucky because Randy has been collecting them for me while he’s on the road but I know that’s not the case for most of you. So, it’s totally fine to just use what you have or what it’s easy for you to get your hands on. They’ll be super cute no matter what you start with!

How to Decorate Bottles with Book Pages

I just love these little bottles and they look so cute on a coffee table or end table! You can display them in anything you like too. Grab a dough bowl, a pretty plate, or a wooden tray and throw a doily on it. Then lay down your bottles and surround them with other cute vintage items. I love the contrast that greenery adds so that’s a must for me. But, you could also use battery candle and some tiny vintage treasures too!

Tips and Tricks…

These book page bottles are really simple to do so I don’t have too many tricks to share with you. One thing that I do advise, however, is making them in batches. One reason is that they look best in groups of at least three. But, the main reason is that they can get a little messy.

Any time you use Mod Podge things can get messy and that is true with these bottles. You can keep the mess to a minimum though if you cover the body of all of your bottles first before you move on to the necks and tops. You can keep your fingers pretty clean while adding the paper to the body of your bottle. Once you get into the nooks and crannies of the tops though, you will be getting your fingers dirty. This isn’t a big deal but it does make working with the body of your bottle more tricky. For that reason, I do all my bodies first and then do all my tops. Easy peasy!

I really like the way the old book pages look but you could also use any type of newer book page too. In fact, if you used a mix of old and new pages, you could get some great color contrasts. You could even use scrapbook paper if you wanted to. You’d just need to dampen it first since it’s thicker than books pages. If you love the idea of old pages but don’t want to rip up an existing book (believe me I get it!) you can snag one of the paper packets that I have here on the website. The pages in the packs have been taken from books that had already fallen apart. So, no worries, no books were harmed in the making of those packs!

  • Bottles ( I used those cute little syrup bottles from Crackle Barrell but you can use any you have on hand)
  • Old book pages
  • Scissors
  • Matte Mod Podge
  • Paint brush
  • Raffia

Step by Step Instructions

  • Start by trimming the plain area around the edges of your pages off so that you only have words.
  • Figure out what size paper you need to cover your bottle and tear it to size.
  • Then, use the paint brush to apply Mod Podge to the main body of your bottle. No need to cover the bottom and leave the neck and top clean for now.
  • Next wrap your paper around the bottle and add a little more Mod Podge to the end to glue it in place.
  • Now continue your Mod Podge around the neck and top and start training your book page around it, gathering it as you go. Be careful not to twist the paper or you will rip it.
  • If you have any areas of the bottle that are not covered, just rip small pieces of the paper and use the Mod Podge to cover them. Once the whole bottle is covered, add a coat of the Mod Podge over the whole thing to seal it.
  • Once your bottles are dry, cut a couple of strips of raffia to wrap the neck of you bottle then double knot it. Trim the raffia ends to the length you want them and you’re all done!

I absolutely love how these bottles turned out! This is such a quick and simple project with beautiful results. Whatever you end up using to make them, I hope you love them as much as I do!

Tami’s Making: My Vintage Crafting Tutorial Group

June 5, 2021 by

Many of you watch me when I go live on Facebook or catch the replays later on. I love sharing tutorials with you there, as well as here on the blog! But did you know that I also have a membership group where I do multiple exclusive tutorials a month? It’s called Tami’s Making and I can’t wait to tell you all about it!

One of the things I love best about vintage treasures is sharing them with all of you. I enjoy sharing what I find and also what I do with the treasures and how they get displayed. And they truly are treasures! Each piece has so much history and such a story behind it. Even if we don’t know exactly what that story is, we can still appreciate the items and the roles they played in other peoples lives.

Being able to preserve these things and give them a second life where they are loved is so rewarding! I especially love getting to help people find ways to use their own family heirlooms and other vintage treasures. Getting those things out of a box in the basement and giving them a place of honor in our homes is just the best. And that’s what I do in my group, Tami’s making! I show you how to take what you already have, or what you find, and turn them into something spectacular!

Tami’s Making: My Vintage Crafting Tutorial Group

If you love vintage treasures and you love crafting then Tami’s Making is probably the perfect fit for you. This group is all about the love of collecting and the joy of sharing our collections with our family and friends.  It’s a way of making things to cherish. Don’t have many keepsakes?  Don’t worry, you can still join us!  I will tell you where to find the things we are using and how much they may cost.  It’s all about treasure hunting and creating!! And if you don’t have time for the hunting, I have a solution for that too! I have put together Vintage Treasure Boxes that you can purchase that are full of fabulous items you can create with.

I use all the vintage treasures that I have found while shopping at antique stores, vintage markets, yard sales, and thrift shops. Sometimes in the group I even take you along with me for the shopping! I share tips about what to look for and how to identify the best items. Most often the best items are the ones that speak to you but, sometimes it is helpful to have a little background information about making selections.

The Membership Details…

The membership is $15 a month and includes no fewer than 3 new tutorials each month. Sometimes there are more if I am feeling really inspired during those weeks. And, you also have access to all the group’s past video tutorials. I have been doing this since February of 2019 so that’s a whole lot of tutorials you’ll be able to watch!

You can also jump in and jump out of the group any time you want to. And you can do it as many times as you want! I know that certain times of the year get really busy and sometimes you just don’t have that extra money to spend. So, by all means join us when you can and take a break whenever you need to!

I really love this group and all the ladies in it! We have such a great time crafting together. I love teaching people how to create their own vintage treasures but I also learn a lot from the gals in our group. It is so much fun to get to share our fabulous finds and treasured heirlooms with each other. I hope that you will join us so we can all share our passions with each other while also creating some really special pieces. You can always just try it for a month to decide if it’s a good fit for you! If you have any questions, please let me know. And I hope to see you soon!

Introducing Vintage Treasure Boxes

May 25, 2021 by

I am so excited to share some fun news with you this week! I’m introducing my brand new Vintage Treasure Boxes and I can’t wait for you to see what they’re all about!

This project has been on my heart for a long while now and the timing finally feels right. I have finally been able to work out all the details and get them ready to launch. I am so thrilled to introduce my Vintage Treasure Boxes to you! Now I am able to give you access to a collection vintage treasures that I’ve collected all in a box delivered directly to your home!

Introducing Vintage Treasure Boxes

I share lots of fun projects with you that use vintage treasures. And I realize that not everyone has bins of treasures at home like I do. I also understand that hitting up the vintage markets and Amish country all the time can be hard to do. With these Vintage Treasure Boxes, I’ve done the shopping for you! I give you a large variety of items so that you can start your own treasure collection that is perfect for crafting or displaying.

It can take a long time and a lot of digging to collect all of these items. With these vintage boxes, I’ve already done all of the foot work for you! In the video below I show you what comes in some of the first boxes and also give you some ideas of how to use them. Each box will be different because the items come from markets not stores. Every piece is unique! But I will be including similar items in each one.

The awesome thing about the individuality of each box is that you can order them more than once and never get the same thing twice! I am including a variety of book and music sheets in each box but I know that some of you will want more. So, I am also offering paper packs. You can get a small pack or a large pack, depending on what you need.

Watch the Vintage Treasure Box video here!!

Some of the items in the box…

As soon as you get your Vintage Treasure Box, you’ll be ready to start crafting! Everyone gets a vintage bottle and items to decorate it. You get a bundle of beautiful lace that you can tie on any of your creations. Some of the other items may include:

  • keys
  • dominos
  • buttons
  • door knobs
  • spindles
  • spools
  • post cards
  • flash cards
  • clock faces
  • scrolls
  • tags
  • spoons
  • coins
  • metal casters
  • book pages and sheet music
  • Oh that beautiful lace!

Know that each of the items in these boxes has been hand picked by me at vintage markets. Nothing has come from a craft store. Each item is a beautiful part of history that we can honor and display in our homes. I am so excited to share these beautiful pieces with you and get you on your way to using them in your crafting! If you aren’t sure how to use these items, I have lots of tutorials here on the blog and on my my YouTube channel that you can check out. And of course you can watch me live on my Facebook page!

I hope you love these boxes as much as I have loved putting them together for you! I hope you feel inspired by them and have so much fun receiving them and using the pieces! Happy vintage crafting, friends!

How to Make Shabby Chic Furniture

May 14, 2021 by

I have a fabulous furniture makeover for you today, friends! I’m showing you how to make shabby chic furniture out of pieces you already have and the results are beautiful!

If you are like me, you probably have at least one piece of furniture that you don’t love the look of but also don’t want to replace. For me it is my dining room set. I really hate the chairs but love the functionality of the table and don’t want to get rid of it. So, I decided to give the chairs a makeover. I’m bringing you along and showing you how to make shabby chic furniture. It’s easy to do and looks amazing when it’s done!

How to Make Shabby Chic Furniture

Some of you already know that I have been a painter for 25 years and have lots of experience with different painting techniques. I’m excited to share this one with you because it is so versatile! I’m using it to transform my chairs but you can do this to any piece of furniture. I’ve also done it on fireplaces, entryways, and doors. It’s really fun with chairs though because you can use the muslin shreds to give them an added layer of shabby chic!

Let’s talk paint…

For this project I’m using Country Chic chalk paint. Country Chic is my favorite but any good quality chalk paint will work too. The great thing about chalk paint is that your rarely need a primer or a finish. It covers so well and holds up well too.

The chairs I’m working on are ones that don’t get used a whole lot so I’m really not worried about their durability. I don’t have small kids climbing in and out of them or anything, they mostly just sit and wait for holidays. If you want to use this technique on something that sees everyday use, like your kitchen table and chairs, you will want to add some added protection.

For durability, or if you like a glossier look, try using Sherman Williams Pro Classic Semi gloss paint. You would need to prime your furniture first but you could definitely make it work. Just chose a white and a beige color and use the same process that I show you in the video.

Shabby Chic Furniture Supply List

  • Piece of furniture for painting (I am using by dining room chairs)
  • Country Chic paint (Simplicity and Tami Loves Beige)
  • Chip brush
  • Paint tray
  • Sanding block
  • Damp cloth
  • Muslin
  • Scissors

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Start by lightly sanding your piece of furniture. You just need to scuff it up a bit, not take all the varnish off.
  2. Pour some of each color of paint into your paint tray and then use your chip brush to dip into both colors and then dab it of in the tray.
  3. Next, use dabbing motions to apply the paint to your piece of furniture. Continue until your whole surface is covered.
  4. If you want to add a second coat, lightly sand your surface and then add the second coat.
  5. While your paint is drying, use your scissor to cut one inch strips in your muslin and tear it to make muslin strips. Then cut your long strip into smaller strips that will fit around your chair spindles or table legs (depending on the piece of furniture you are working with).
  6. Next, just wrap them around your spindles or legs and double knot them at the back. Repeat until you’ve covered your whole spindle or leg. I also took a few longer shreds, put them together, and tied them into a bow at the top of my chairs.

The Wrap Up…

Obviously we all have different pieces of furniture that we are working with so yours won’t match mine exactly. I wanted to show you what I did in order to inspire you to use a similar method to shabby chic your own furniture! The paint technique is super easy and adding the muslin give the furniture some cute texture and dimension. I just love how my chairs turned out and hope you do too!

How to Decorate with Greenery

May 7, 2021 by

Many of you may already know how much I love to decorate. You may also know that I love to use greenery in my decor. What you may not know is how to make it work in your own home. So, today I’m giving you all my tips and tricks and showing you how to decorate with greenery!

Vintage decor is my favorite thing, I just love it. The uniqueness and variety available is the best. I also love the neutral colors that often come with vintage decor. But sometimes you really need a pop of natural color mixed in. The perfect solution: greenery! I know that some of you are not sure if greenery is for you or where to start if it is. I wanted to answer your questions and put your mind at ease so, in the video below, I show you everything you need to know about how to decorate with greenery!

how to decorate with greenery

How to Decorate with Greenery

The first thing you need to know is that I am not talking about our grandmothers’ greenery. I know that some of the fake plants of the past have been cringe worthy but that’s not how it is anymore! You can still find low cost low quality pieces of course, but there are also some fabulous, reasonably priced, items available now.

Hang Down Wisteria

I am picky about my greenery, they have to look great for me to use them or sell them. But I never have a problem finding what I need. If you’re worried about quality, you can shop my website for your greenery and know that they are top notch. I only sell what I use in my own home! You can also click on any picture in this post and it will take you right to the featured greenery.

Small Staghorn Fern

Fabric vs Plastic Greenery

Another thing you need to know about greenery is that there is a difference between fabric and plastic. Normally I prefer the fabric variety because it has a softer more realistic look. But when it comes to things like ferns, I love the plastic because they can add so much more detail and variation with the molds they use to make them than you can achieve with fabric. So, what ends up happening in my house is a healthy mix of both fabric and plastic greenery. Nothing like a good compromise, am I right?!

Hazy Hops Half Sphere

How to Clean your Greenery

I know that a big concern about getting into greenery is wondering how to keep them clean. Here is where plastic has a bit of an edge over fabric. With my plastic greenery I just gather it up once a year and wash it with warm soapy water. Done and done! A little feather duster for in between cleaning works too but they just don’t seem to need it all that much.

Garden Eucalyptus Drop Swag

Fabric greenery is a little more delicate than plastic but it’s still no big deal. Again, just keep up on the dusting with a feather duster throughout the year. Then, once a year, you can gather them up just like you do the plastic ones. Some of your greenery may be fine to wash with mild soap and water. For those that aren’t, however, put a few pieces in a resealable bag with a few spoonsful of coarse salt or corn meal. The salt or corn meal will act as a mild abrasive to remove dirt and grime that has clung to the greenery. Brush them off and you’re ready to go!

Extra Large Succulent

How to use your Greenery

Ok now for the fun part friends! Finding spots to add greenery into my decor is one of my favorite things. Stand in the center of any room and start looking around. Keep an eye out for any spots that need a little color or texture. Don’t forget to look up too! Here is a short list of some ways you may want to use your greens…

Bright Green Fern Pick
  • In crocks or large vases
  • On candles or candle sticks
  • Poked into different spots on a mantle
  • Draping off a high cabinet, book shelf, or mantel
  • In cute pots or planters
  • In hard to decorate areas like on top of the fridge or a high cupboard
  • Mixed in with real plants or flowers outside to fill them in

The list is endless really. Anywhere you add greenery you will add dimension to your room. Mixing in different shapes, sizes, and textures adds so much more!

Dew Leaf Vine

Any time you are using greenery remember that they come to you pretty flattened out. They are all wired though so all you need to do is bend your stems and fluff them out to give them the 3D look you want. You can also separate larger stems into smaller ones. If you only want a little of something in a spot, just use wire cutters to cut off a small stem and use the rest somewhere else.

The Wrap Up…

Two Toned Airy Plop

That’s all there is too it friends! Using greenery in your decor adds so much to a room. I really couldn’t imagine my home without them. I love plants too but I just can’t realistically use them everywhere I want to. Hopefully I’ve given you some ideas and that you are excited to try decorating with greenery in your own home. I love these pretties and I hope you do too!
