How to Make a Yarn Pumpkin

August 26, 2022 by

I have another fun DIY pumpkin project for you today, friends! I am showing you how to make a yarn pumpkin out of a dollar store foam pumpkin. The results are adorable and I can’t wait for you to see them!

I love browsing my local dollar store for things that I can use in my crafts. A lot of times, you can find a decorative item that you can use as a starting point for a really fabulous decor piece. This project is a great example of what I mean.

I found foam pumpkins for a couple of dollars and decided to figure out how to make a yarn pumpkin out of one. Then I used braided yarn and some great little vintage items on my pumpkins and I love the way they turned out. I hope you do too!

How to Make a Yarn Pumpkin

There are a few ways that you can use your yarn for this project. You can use yarn on its own and wrap the pumpkin. Or you can twist it before adding it to the pumpkin body. I saw a lady who braided hers though and I loved the thickness and the texture of the braided yarn. So that is the method I went with. You can use whichever yarn method you like best though!

How to Make a Yarn Pumpkin Supply List

  • Dollar store foam pumpkin
  • Cream colored paint
  • Paint brush
  • Yarn ( I used decorative yarn)
  • Hot glue gun

How to Make a Yarn Pumpkin Instructions

  • Start by giving your pumpkin a coat or two of cream colored paint. I love neutral colors and a matte finish so I use Country Chic Chalk Paint for most of my projects.
  • Next, remove the stem of the pumpkin and hollow out a small opening in the top of it. Then cut a similar hole in the bottom of the pumpkin.
Cut a small opening in the top and bottom of your pumpkin.
  • Next, cut three 20 inch strips of your yarn. Then tie them together at the top. Make two more of these bundles and then braid each of them. Tie the braid off at the end.
Braid each section of three ribbon pieces.
  • Next tie three braided sections together at the top. Then braid them together and tie them off at the bottom.
  • Now grab your glue gun and one completed section of yarn braid. Start at the top and follow a seam in the pumpkin with hot glue down to the bottom. Stick the end of your section down into the top of your pumpkin. Then push the yarn down onto the glue. Then follow the seam on the other side of the pumpkin and repeat the same process. Tuck the other end down into the top of the pumpkin.
Use hot glue to secure your yarn braids in place.
  • Continue adding your yarn braids until your pumpkin is covered. Then it’s time to dress it up!
  • Use hot glue to add your stem. You can use anything you want for this. Sticks, dried pumpkin stems, spindles, or anything at all!
  • Then decorate your pumpkin stem. I made a bow out of stained muslin shreds and tied it around the base of the stem. Then I added a neat vintage tag to that. You can use any of your vintage bits and bobs to do something similar.

Tips and Tricks

The easiest way for me to do all the yarn was to work in batches. I cut a ton of the ribbon sections. Then I knotted them all in sections of three. When I had a bunch of these sections, I started braiding them. Then when I had a good pile of braids I moved on to braiding the braids together.

The nice thing is that I was able to do a lot of the while sitting in front of the TV or listening to an audio book. I enjoy doing both of those things but I can’t just sit there. I know many of you are the same! So this is a great project to work on while relaxing with a show or a good book.

You Could Also Use Pre-Braided ribbon

If you aren’t crazy about the idea of doing all that braiding though, you have another option. I found some beautiful “chunky knit” ribbon at Hobby Lobby that I used for another pumpkin. I preferred the way my hand braided pumpkin turned out.

But the pre-braided pumpkin was really cute too. It looks like a corded sweater which gives it a warm cozy look for fall. So you do have another option if you don’t have the time or want to braid a bunch of ribbon. Either way you cover your pumpkin, you can still dress them up the same way.

The Wrap Up

And that’s how you make a yarn pumpkin out of a dollar store foam pumpkin. I would love to see how you use them in your own home. So if you post any pictures of your yarn pumpkins on social media, tag me so I can check them out! As always, I hope you love this project as much as I do. Happy crafting, friends!

Decorating Vintage Horse Bits

August 17, 2022 by

I love dressing up old vintage pieces and mixing them into my decor. Today I am decorating vintage horse bits and showing you how it’s done. They add beauty and texture to my home and I am sure they will for yours too!

Horse bits make very interesting decor pieces. I have a few scattered around my home and I love them all. Because of their height and width, they are great for hanging on a small section of wall or mixed in with other wall items. The way I use them is hanging on the wall but you can display yours however you’d like.

In the video below I am decorating vintage horse bits because vintage is what I love. But you can adapt this project to suit any style or color scheme! More about that late. For now, grab your glue gun and let’s get crafting!

Decorating Vintage Horse Bits

The reason I use different ribbons and laces is to give the piece texture. Having different shades and ribbon styles add depth to your design and really makes them pop!

But you don’t have to use the same things that I did! I love vintage and I love texture. So I used laces and ribbons that give the vintage look. But you could use any ribbon combos that you love! All new ribbons from the craft store, or all new unstained muslin. Any color combos that you like!

I am just here to inspire you with an idea. What you use just depends on your style and the look you are going for!

How to Stain Seam Binding

I used stained seam binding to decorate my horse bits. In fact, I use it for lots of different projects! It is really easy to stain a batch and have it on hand for crafting.

All you need is a pot with a bit of water, 2 family sized tea bags, and your seam binding. Heat the water in your pot and then add the tea bags to steep. Pull off a big wad of the binding and scrunch it up into a ball that will fit in your pot.

Place your wad of binding into the tea water and make sure it all gets soaked. You can leave it to soak for a bit or pull it right out. Leaving it longer will give you a darker color.

When you’re happy with the soak of your binding, pull it out of the tea and wring it out. Then plop it right in the microwave. Set the microwave for 3 minutes at half power and let it go.

After the 3 minutes, fluff it all out and then wad it up again. Put it back in for another 3 minutes at half power. Continue this process until the seam binding mostly dry and wrinkling (about 3 rounds). Then fluff it out and leave it to finish drying. This won’t take long at all.

Decorating Vintage Horse Bits Supply List

  • Vintage horse bit
  • Stained seam binding
  • Muslin shreds
  • Lace (vintage if you have it!)
  • Other fun embellishments (I cut up a part of an old doily and tape measure to add to mine!)
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun
  • Small vintage pieces like metal tags, keys, bits of jewelry chain, etc.

Decorating Vintage Horse Bits Instructions

  • Start by cutting pieces of your stained seam binding to the length that you want it. Then start tying it on to the horse bit. I make the knot at the center point of the binding. And I only tie it once, no need to double knot.
  • Continue this process until you have a good base on the bit. How much you use will depend on the size bit you have.
  • Next, start filling in with different laces and ribbons. Once you have a good coverage, trim your ends to even them.
  • I used a section of a measuring tape on my horse bit. It needed a little hot glue to keep it in place because it didn’t look right tied. So if you have something that isn’t staying or behaving like you want it too, just give it a dab of hot glue.
  • Now add in your small vintage pieces. I used a metal tag to over where my ribbon ties were. And I added in sections of vintage necklaces in too.

The Wrap Up

And that’s all about decorating vintage horse bits! A fun way to display some of your favorite vintage laces and small bits of pretty vintage items. I mention it in the video but I’ll mention it here too. Don’t spend more than $20 on one of these bits. A savvy/lucky shopper can get them for $10 and $20 is getting too high.

Also, if you can’t find truly vintage horse bits at your antique markets, or don’t want to wait to find one. One of my followers mentioned that you can find decorative ones on Amazon. So that’s an option too!

I would love to see how you use them in your own home. So if you post any pictures of your decorated horse bits on social media, tag me so I can check them out! As always, I hope you love this project as much as I do. Happy crafting, friends!

How to Make Twine Pumpkins

August 9, 2022 by

I have a super cute fall craft project so share with you today! I am showing you how to make twine pumpkins that are the perfect addition to your fall decor.

I know it is a little early for some of you to be thinking about fall. But for those in our crafting community who do craft shows and sell online, this is prime fall crafting time. I wanted to share this project with you today so that you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy learning how to make twine pumpkins!

All you really need for this project is some twine, floral wire, and your hot glue gun. It’s quick, easy, and oh so adorable! These pumpkins are perfect for vintage, rustic, or farmhouse decor. And they can be customized to suit your exact tastes. So, let’s get crafting!

How to Make Twine Pumpkins

I have made a ton of different kinds of pumpkins over the years. I love them all and I never get tired of making them. There is just something about fall decor that makes me so happy. I originally shared this project a few years ago in my membership group.

I thought enough time had passes since then that the gals wouldn’t mind me sharing it with you now. Because they are just too cute not to share! These little cuties only take a few minutes to make and they look so great tucked into your fall decor.

And, as you can see from the pictures, you can make them in different sizes! They look cute with the different sizes displayed together. Or you can decide on the size you like and display them in groups of three where they fit best.

In the instructions below, I explain how I made my pumpkins the shape and size that they are. But you can absolutely play around with them and see what you like best!

For the smaller pumpkins, I wrapped two fingers instead of four.

Pumpkin Stem Ideas

For the twine pumpkins that I made I used actual pumpkin stems as the toppers. What I try and do every year is save my pumpkin stems. I just lay them out on top of my fall storage bins and let them dry for months and months.

Then, when it’s time to start crafting for fall again, they are ready to go! My mom and some friends save theirs for me. And I also keep an eye out at the grocery store and farmers market and grab little pumpkins with stems I think look neat.

But you don’t have to use real pumpkin stems!! There are lots of other options that you can try. Sticks work great and lend to the rustic look of the twine. And you can also use any of your favorite vintage items.

An old knob or a spindle would be cute. You can use absolutely anything, really! And if you want the look of the real deal but don’t have them on hand, you can actually purchase dried and fake pumpkin stems online. So you have tons of options!

How to Dress up Your Twine Pumpkins

Once you have your pumpkin “stems” attached your twine pumpkins are ready for display! But you can also take them a step further and dress them up a bit. There are a million different ways that you can do this.

How much you fancy them up and what you use will depend on what your decor tastes are. And what you have on hand. Here are a few ways that I have added to these and other pumpkins that I have made…

  • Add moss to the top of the pumpkin around the stem. You can use Spanish moss or any other moss that you like.
  • Tie a cute little bow around the base of your stem. Use pretty ribbon or a piece of vintage lace. You could also use a muslin shred. You know how much I love those!
  • Attach little vintage treasures around the stem. Buttons, small pieces of jewelry, a skeleton key tied on with your ribbon. You can use any fun little items to add more texture, depth, and beauty to your pumpkins!

How to Make Twine Pumpkins Supply List

  • Twine (medium thickness)
  • Wire or floral cutters
  • Floral wire
  • Hot glue gun
  • Your choice of “stem” (old stems, sticks, vintage items, etc…)

How to Make Twine Pumpkins Instructions

  • Start by wrapping the twine around all four fingers of one hand 15 times. Then cut the end of the twine. Give or take 15 times, it doesn’t have to be exact. But I played around with it a lot and when I added too many wraps it didn’t do as well. So just don’t over do it.
  • Then take a small piece of wire and put it through the center of your twine wrap. Twist the wire to secure the twine and then snip off any excess wire.
  • Next, repeat the same process to create a second bundle of twine.
  • Then use the glue gun to glue the two sections together. The floral wire of both sections should be facing up. Apply the glue to the top area of the sections and then hold them together for a few seconds while they adhere.
  • Next, make two more bundles and glue them together just like you did before. Then glue your two sections together.
  • If your pumpkin looks full enough you can stop adding twine here. But if you want it a little more full, you can make another bundle and glue that to your original four. I ended up with 5 bundles in this pumpkin.
  • Then fluff and arrange your the twine into a cute little circle. You pumpkin base is done!
  • Finally, use the hot glue to attach a pumpkin stem to the top.

The Wrap Up

And that’s how you make twine pumpkins, friends! They are easy and fun to make. And there are so many ways that you can dress them up and customize them to fit your own style. I left mine basic, but you can make yours as minimalistic or as extravagant as you like!

I would love to see how you use these twine pumpkins in your own home. So if you post any pictures of your them on social media, tag me so I can check them out! As always, I hope you love this project as much as I do. Happy crafting, friends!

How to Turn a Vintage Window into a Mirror

July 26, 2022 by

I have a great new project to share with you today, friends! I love all my projects. But I am really excited about this one! I am showing you how to turn a vintage window into a mirror. And you can do it with very few supplies and steps.

It is rare to find wooden windows in modern homes anymore, let alone vintage ones. And while the energy efficient windows available today are fabulous for many reasons. They just don’t have the character of their ancestors.

But! Even though beautiful functioning windows may be a thing of the past, it doesn’t mean we can’t find other ways to bring them back into our homes! Learn how to turn a vintage window into a mirror and you have a unique way to bring a vintage window new life. And you will also have a fabulous addition to your vintage or rustic decor!

How to Turn a Vintage Window into a Mirror

I first shared this project as a mini-tutorial on TikTok and was absolutely delighted when it took off and was seen by a ton of viewers! I knew that if TikTok users loved it, then many of you would too. So I had to turn it into a blog post for you!

You can check out the video if you want to (I’ve included it below). But I have also written out all the supplies and step for you. That way you can refer back to the instructions as you go instead of having to re-watch the video if you have questions.

Where to Find Old Windows

If you live in an older house, especially one that has been in your family for generations, you may only have to poke around your own place to find a window for this project. Most of us will have to look a little further afield to find ours. But they are much easier to find than you might think! Below are some great places to check!

Vintage Markets

You know I love to wander the vintage markets. And you can definitely find some fabulous windows here. While looking for your other treasures, you can keep an eye out for booths that sell windows. Some of the ones you will find at vintage markets are pricier though.

This is because some of them are works of art in themselves. If this is the kind of base you are envisioning, then by all means, grab one that you fall in love with. The window that I used for my mirror was just a run of the mill variety. And those you can pick up pretty cheaply other places.

Habitat for Humanity Restores

I’m sure you have heard of Habitat for Humanity and the wonderful homes that they provide. But did you know that part of their funding comes from the Restores that they have throughout the United States? They take donations (much like Goodwill) and then sell the gently used items to the public.

One of the things that I love most about the Habitat for Humanity stores is that they have more than the normal household items that you would find at a resale shop. They also receive donations leftover from local building and renovation projects.

So you can find great things like old windows and other pieces of vintage homes! And, depending on your area, the prices are often super low. If you have a Restore in the area and love looking for fun finds, I highly recommend checking yours out!

Best part? Everything you buy goes to a wonderful cause! It’s a win win, for sure!

Garage and Estate Sales

We all know that you can find treasures at garage and (especially) estate sales. You may have to wade through a lot of stuff that you don’t need or want. But it can be so worth it when you find something that is perfect for you.

You may stumble across a few old windows while out garagesale-ing this season. And now you will know just what to do with them!

Watch the Video Here!

How to Turn a Vintage Window into a Mirror Supply List

  • Vintage window with the glass intact
  • Drop cloth (or other protective layer)
  • Glass cleaner
  • Paper towel
  • Mirror Effect by Rustoleum

How to Turn a Vintage Window into a Mirror Instructions

  • Start by choosing the side of the window that you want facing out. It may be the side in better shape. Or the side with more character. Whichever you like best, that’s the one to go with! Just keep in mind that you will be painting the side of the glass that will hang on the wall. (Don’t worry, I will remind you when we get to that point!)
  • Then use the glass cleaner to clean the glass well.
  • Next, lay out a drop cloth or other protective layer outdoors. As with all spray paint, it is important to work in a well ventilated, outdoor space.
  • Place your window with the “nice” side facing down. You should be working on the side opposite of the one that you want facing out. (See, I promised I’d remind you!)
Spritz the window with glass cleaner
  • Then gently spritz the glass cleaner onto the window. Don’t wipe it off, this will give your mirror the spotted look of an aged mirror.
Spray with mirror paint
  • While the mirror is still wet, coat it with the Mirror Effect spray paint. Allow the paint to dry.
  • Then repeat the process for a second coat. Spritz with the glass cleaner again. Then add another coat of the mirror paint. Allow the paint to dry and decide if you need a third layer of coverage or not.
  • Finally, give it one last coat of the mirror paint and you’re almost done!
  • Attach hanging hardware to the back of the window mirror and find a spot to hang it!

The Wrap Up!

And that’s it, friends! A few supplies and a few steps is all you need to turn a vintage window into your own treasured mirror. I, of course love the vintage look. So I used the glass cleaner to make my mirror look spotty and aged.

But, if you would rather have a cleaner look, you can absolutely skip the glass cleaner step. You would simply add straight coats of the mirror paint until you are happy with the coverage. Just allow it to dry between each coat. And then once more after your final coat.

I would love to see how you use these window mirrors in your own home. So if you post any pictures of yours on social media, tag me so I can check them out! As always, I hope you love this project as much as I do. Happy crafting, friends!

All About Vintage Buttons

July 20, 2022 by

If there is one thing that I use A LOT in my crafting (other than muslin shreds, of course!) it’s buttons. There are so many fabulous buttons out there that need a home and a second chance at appreciation. So, today I am talking all about vintage buttons. With a little bit of knowledge, you will be on your way to curating your own vintage button collection!

All About Vintage Buttons

There are so many different types on buttons out there. You can find wooden, glass, bone, brass, silver, plastic, colorful, crocheted, the list goes on. Each one gives a unique look and feel. Each one has its own unique story.

If you are at an antique market and come across a vendor that specializes in buttons and you have time, stop for a few. They usually know a lot about buttons. And, if nothing else, it gives you a great feel for the huge variety of buttons that you can find.

Many of them have cards that they have sewn their vintage buttons to, with pricing right on it. That gives you an idea of how much the many types of buttons will cost. That way, when you are button browsing, you will know if a certain type is more than you want to spend.

Or which ones will make great filler buttons, etc. You will also learn which types you really love and be able to keep your eyes pealed for those!

Glass Buttons

Glass buttons are a beautiful addition to any collection. They come in many different styles and shapes. Some will be cut in lovely shapes or designs. While others are made to look just like regular buttons. The way to tell if a button is glass is that, for one, it will be shiny.

They are also usually a little cold. Glass buttons also make a distinctive ping when they hit a hard another piece of glass or a hard surface. Once you have been around them for awhile, you can also distinguish a distinct texture of the glass.

Bone Buttons

Bone buttons are one of oldest type of buttons there are. They were first used in France centuries before they gained in popularity and became widely used in throughout the 19th century. Bone buttons were often carved with great skill to look like ivory. And they were appreciated for their strength, clean looks, and versatility.

You can tell a bone button because their holes are always much larger than traditional button holes. Modern “bone” buttons are made of synthetic materials and carved to look like the original thing. But the authentic buttons are definitely a piece of history.

Colorful Buttons

You know that I love using neutral colors in my home. So cream and white buttons are usually my go to. Another reason that I have a ton of the neutral colored buttons is that they are so much more readily available. These colors were (and probably still are) much more commonly worn.

But pretty colorful buttons still have an important role in my life! I always keep a bag on hand. Because a I never know when a colorful button is exactly what I need to tie a project or a bow together perfectly.

Brass and Silver Buttons

Some of my absolute favorite buttons fall into this category. There is so much art and craftsmanship that goes into these buttons. Each one is absolutely beautiful. These pretties tend to be more pricy because of the detail of each one. But I absolutely love finding them.

For these, I use them in projects that will really let their beauty and originality shine. Using them on the vintage bottles that I decorate is always fun. Or steampunk creations. I also like adding these to frames that I decorate. Anytime that I can give one a spot where I can admire it, I get so excited!

Ways to Display your Buttons

There are almost as many ways to incorporate vintage buttons into your decor as there are buttons themselves. I love to use them in my craft projects. And I also find cute ways to display them in groups. I like to look for cute little vintage containers to pile some buttons in.

A small dish, a salt, or a tea cup can all be used to as vessels for you buttons. Then work them into larger a larger dish with other items. Or into a vignette for added beauty, detail, and texture!

I also love to make button strings and button garlands. They lay beautifully into larger arrangements and add beauty and texture (even color!) to any area in your home. If you want to learn how to make your own button garlands, you can go to my YouTube channel and search “buttons”. Or you can find the tutorial here on the blog.

In both places I show you step by step how to make these adorable garlands. They are really simple to do and a great way to drape your vintage treasures into your decor. One of my favorite things to do with the button garlands is to lay them into greenery or wreaths. Their colors pop so beautifully against the greens. And they cling easily to the texture of the greeneries.

The Wrap Up

And that is some of what I know about buttons! I am not an expert on their histories or manufacturing. But I sure do love each and every one that I find. Since I use them so much in the projects that I share with you, I wanted to get into some of the basics of buttons so you will be able to build your own collection.

You can also find bags of buttons on my website! I have beautiful collections of cream ones. And also bags that are a mixed variety. You can find them all here!

I would love to see how you use buttons in your own home. So if you post any pictures of your button displays on social media, tag me so I can check them out! As always, I hope you love this project as much as I do. Happy crafting, friends!

How to Make a Vintage Summer Kite

July 13, 2022 by

I have a fun summer craft project for you today, friends! In the video below, I am showing you how to make a vintage summer kite using some poster board and beautiful vintage linens. I hope you love it as much as I do!

One of my favorite things to do is to be part of the Southern Crush at Home Craftathons™ every season. It is such a fun event and I love getting to be a part of it. For one of my summer sessions, I taught everyone how to make a vintage summer kite. It was a big hit and I was excited to see how many other people loved the idea!

I wanted to show you how easy it is to make your own vintage kites. They make great wall hangings and are a great way to add color or to tie together your vintage decor. So grab your glue guns, and let’s get crafting!

How to Make a Vintage Summer Kite

These adorable kites are simple to make and are perfect for showing off the beautiful vintage linens that we find at markets. I bring home so many because I know I want to be able to honor and enjoy them. I love this project because it is a unique way to use both vintage linens and lace.

Your kites will look different from mine since we won’t be working with the same materials. (Which btw, is one of favorite things about vintage decor. The items are all unique to themselves and likely won’t be found in anyone else’s home!)

But I show you how you can take what you have and love and use the same method that I do to create your own unique kites!

But Wait…there’s More!

There are two short videos where I show you how to make these vintage kites, step by step. But, if you watch until the end of the second video, I also show you a bonus project! It was one I had worked on with the gals in my membership group, Tami’s Making. And I really loved the way it turned out!

So, if you want a little added inspiration, be sure to watch through (or fast forward through!) to the end.

  1. Start by drawing your kite on the poster board. From top tip down to where the kite flares out is 5 1/2 inches. From top tip to bottom tip is 14 inches. And the top edges of your kite are 11 inches on each side. Use a ruler or measuring tape to get your lines nice and straight.
  2. Next, carefully cut your kite out. Then cut out a second one so that you can stack them for stability.
  3. Now use the hot glue and build a frame of popsicle sticks around the outside edges of your kite to build the frame. Cut them to size if you need to. Glue them to each other but not the kite piece itself.
  4. Then add more sticks horizontally for more support.
  5. Take a piece of muslin that is large enough to cover your kite and cover it with spray adhesive.
  6. Then lay down the second kite cut out (the one with no sticks on it), press it down and let it set for just a bit so it can begin to tack up. Then cut the muslin to the shape of your kite. This will be the back of your kite.
  7. Next, glue the back piece (poster board side down/muslin out) to the stick side of your other kite piece.
  8. Cut your fabric to the size of your kite piece.
  9. Flip your fabric so the back side is up and spray it with adhesive. Then place your kite piece on it and push it into place.
  10. Then fill in the rest of your kite with lace, embroidery, other pieces of your fabric, etc.
Use craft sticks to make a frame for your kite
Add your linen to your kite base.

Trimming Your Kite

  1. Now it’s time to move on to the edging of your kite. Use hot glue to attach your lace or other edging to one side of your kite at a time. Remember that you want to cover the edges of your board here. So you want to use something that will take your eye away from that and/or cover it well.
  2. Flip your kite over and edge the back of it too.
  3. Then find some larger vintage buttons and glue them to the corners of your kite.
  4. Now cut a small piece of a muslin shred. Use this to make a hanger for the kite. Hot glue one end to the back to the board. Then make and loop and glue the other end down over the first.
  5. Take the lace, muslin shreds, and anything else you have pulled out for the kite strings and bunch one end together. Use a muslin shred to tie a bow around that end. Then use scissor the even up the ends that poke above your tie.
  6. Then hot glue the tie to the end of your kite and trim the ends to even them.
  7. Add a button to the center of your bow.
  8. Next, use muslin shreds to gather and tie a bow at two more spots along your kite strings.
Edge your kite with pretty ribbon or lace.

Conclusion

I really enjoy making these kites. I get to play with lots of fabulous vintage items. And I get to give them new life as a beautiful piece of wall art. I hope you give this project a try!

I would love to see how you use them in your own home. So if you post any pictures of your kites on social media, tag me so I can check them out! As always, I hope you love this project as much as I do. Happy crafting, friends!

How to Make a Fairy Garden Sidewalk

June 17, 2022 by

I have a really fun summer project for you today! I am showing you how to make a fairy garden sidewalk that is the perfect addition to your fairy garden. It is simple to make and adds a whole lot of cute texture for your fairies to enjoy!

I have a big fairy garden in my backyard and used to love teaching classes about them. So I was very excited when I was asked to be a part of the Sparkle Room’s Fancy Fairy Garden Event! As you know, I am all about sharing the things that I love with you. And these little gardens are definitely something I love.

Walkways in fairy gardens add so much to the overall look and feel of the garden. And, when you make your own, you can customize them to fit your own likes and theme. In the video below I show you how to make a sidewalk for your fairy garden that you are sure to love!

How to Make a Fairy Garden Sidewalk

Fairy gardens have really taken off in popularity in the last few years. I have had mine for years so I am having a ton of fun seeing what others are coming up with for their gardens now. There are a ton of great pieces available for purchase out there. But you know how much I love to create my own things.

So I was excited to dive in and make this adorable sidewalk for my fairy garden. It takes hardly any time at all. Which means you will have to resist the temptation to pave your whole garden area with these cuties!

Design Variations

For the sidewalk that you see me make in the video below, I left my mortar mix white. But I have also tried adding black chalk paint to tint it and I loved the way it came out. I realized that the best way to tint the mix is to add the paint first before adding the water.

That will make the paint part of the liquid you need to create the mortar. But will keep the mortar from getting too thin. If you add the paint at the end, you may find you’ll need to add more mortar mix to thicken it back up.

If the mix is too thin, it can cause your piece to crack. So, whatever color you use to tint your mortar, just be sure to add it in first. I love the natural look for my fairy garden but it could be so fun to have some brightly colored sidewalks in yours! I’m thinking yellow brick road!

I love the look of the slate stones I used. But you could also use mulit-colored natural stones or pea gravel. Or, for more color and pizazz, try fish tank stones or colorful craft jewels. What you use just depends on what you like and the theme of your fairy garden!

Other Options

Mortar mix isn’t the only option for this project. You can also use concrete mix for your sidewalk if you already have some on hand. I know some people who have had a bag of concrete mix in their garages forever. They have it left over from a long ago repair and don’t want to toss it. This is a great way to use some of it up!

You mix and spread the concrete the same way you do with the mortar. It’s just as simple to use and gives you the same consistency. If you have never worked with concrete mix in your crafting, it is actually a very versatile medium with lots of texture and a vintage feel. I highly recommend giving it a try!

If you want to see how I’ve used it in the past, you can check out my post How to Make Concrete Pumpkins. I promise, it’s not nearly as intimidating as it sound! My friend Julie and I have had a ton of fun with it. And I walk you through all the steps. Plus I share the mistakes we made the first go around so you can avoid them and just have fun creating!

How to Make a Fairy Garden Sidewalk Supply List

  • Heave duty aluminum foil (or any foil you have on hand, we are just using it to form a base)
  • White mortar mix (about a cup and a half)
  • Water
  • Bowl for mixing the mortar
  • Stir stick or plastic spoon
  • Non stick cooking spray
  • Stones (I used slate ones that I found online)

How to Make a Fairy Garden Sidewalk Instructions

  • Start by shaping your aluminum foil into the shape of a sidewalk. Make a lip around the whole thing because this will be the mold for you walkway. You can make your sidewalk any shape you want. Straight, winding, or with a turn. Just don’t make then too long or they won’t be as strong. You can always make more sections and put them together to form a longer walkway.
  • Next, add your mortar mix to a bowl and then slowly add water a little at a time and stir until you get it to a good consistency.
  • Spray your foil mold with non stick cooking spray. Then scoop your combined mortar mix and water into the form. Smooth the mix out and press it down into your mold as you go.
  • Next, gently drop your frame on your work surface a couple of times to help the mortar settle. Then gently push your stones into the mortar where you want them. It’s kind of like making a mosaic puzzle!
  • Finally, set the sidewalk aside to cure. When it’s hardened, just remove the foil and it’s ready for your fairies!

The Wrap Up

And that’s it, friends! There are so many different ways you can make your fairy garden sidewalks beautiful. Whatever stones and shapes you want to use, they are going to add a lot of cuteness to your garden.

I would love to see how you use them in your own garden. So if you post any pictures of your fairy gardens on social media, tag me so I can check them out! As always, I hope you love this project as much as I do. Happy crafting, friends!

How to Make Button Garlands

May 18, 2022 by

I love to use button garlands in my vintage decor projects! I use them as finishing touches to my vintage crafts. And drape them into my arrangements. Today I am showing you how to make button garlands for your own home!

If you are part of my Facebook family, you have seen many of the vintage decor that I have displayed around our home. I love working these garlands in because they are a soft accessory that adds subtle details and texture.

Recently, several of you asked about my button garlands and how I make them. So I made a video tutorial all about how to make button garlands. I’ve included that video for you below. I hope you love these vintage garlands as much as I do!

How to Make Button Garlands

Hemp is a little darker and it is twisted more tightly. That makes it stronger than jute or twine. It also makes it easier to thread and string the buttons. You won’t be pulling and tugging through the imperfections of the twine or jute.

And don’t get me wrong, I love both of those strings. It’s their imperfections and texture that add so much dimension to my crafty projects. But our focus in this project is mostly on the buttons. And the hemp doesn’t let the buttons slide around.

So if you are doing a button garland where the buttons are spaced out, you definitely want hemp. If you are making a stacked button garland, using this stiffer string that will hold the weight of the buttons is important.

Tips and Tricks

This project is very simple so I don’t have too many tips for you this time. But I do have a few! The first is to have a sharp pair of scissors on hand while you are working. This will help you because, as you thread your buttons, the end of your string will start to fray. A frayed end makes it hard to add your buttons.

So, when the end starts to come undone, just snip it off and you have a fresh start!

Another thing to keep in mind is to alternate your button types. In a spaced garland, you get to see all the beauty of each button. So choose ones that you want to show off and mix them up to add interest to the piece.

In a stacked garland, if you use too many of the same kind back to back, it all just blends and the buttons get lost. Alternate your buttons between different shapes and textures so they will pop. And keep in mind that you won’t see the faces of the buttons in this style garland. For this reason, I hold back my alabaster buttons and others like them so I can appreciate them fully in other projects.

How to Make Button Garlands Supply List

  • Buttons! Large, small, colorful, or neutral…whatever you love or have on hand. If you don’t have a large button collection and would like to start one, I have some bags available here on the website!
  • Hemp cord
  • Scissors

How to Make Button Garlands Instructions

The first thing you need to do before getting started on your button garland is decide which kind you want to make. I usually make mine spaced with a fingertip or two between each button. But I have also made some cute 8″ garlands with all the buttons stacked right on top of each other.

It just depends on where you want to use them. The spaced button garlands are for draping and hanging in other projects. And the stacked garlands get lain down in displays with other items. Once you decide on the type you want, you are ready to get started!

Stacked Button Garlands

  • Start by cutting your hemp about 8-10 inches long. Then, using any combination of 2 or 4 hole buttons, just string them one after the other using one hole on each button. After your first button, tie your hemp off to give your garland a good secure base.

Spaced Button Garlands

  • Cut your hemp string to the desired length for your garland. Then weave the end of your hemp through two holes on your first button. Work it down to the bottom of your string and then tie it off to make a secure base for your garland.
  • If you are using a 2 hole button, that is all you need to do to it. But, for a 4 hole button, cut a small string of hemp, weave it through the 2 holes you didn’t use to thread it. Then tie it off. That way you don’t have 2 empty holes. The extra hemp adds some fun action to the garland!
  • Now choose your next button. Thread it onto the hemp and pull it down into position, leaving as much space as you want to between the buttons.
  • Continue on in this way until your hemp string is full.

The Wrap Up

And that’s it, friends! It doesn’t get much cuter or simpler than this project. There are so many ways that you can incorporate these garlands into your projects and decor. I hope that I have inspired you to make some of your own!

I would love to see how you use them in your own home. So if you post any pictures of your garlands on social media, tag me so I can check them out! As always, I hope you love this project as much as I do. Happy crafting, friends!

How to Make Paper Cabbage Roses

May 3, 2022 by

I have a simple and beautiful project for you today, friends! I am teaching you how to make paper cabbage roses. These big and beautiful cabbage roses make great display items and sweet gifts. I hope you love them as much as I do!

You already know that I love anything crafty. And I also love to use greenery and florals in my decor. This simple project is a great way to mix some color and texture into my displays. They are beautiful and, believe it or not, they start out as paper bags!

In the video below I show you how to make paper cabbage roses using dye and paper bags. I have also included the supply list and step by step instructions. That way you can watch the video and then refer back here if you have questions while you are crafting. This is a fun project to do and I hope you give it a try!

How to Make Paper Cabbage Roses

One of the questions I always get about this project is, “what type of paper bag should I use?” I always use the lunch size to start. And I think the white bags take the color better so I prefer to use them. But the brown bags give a look all their own. They have a more muted look that some people love! So basically, it comes down to your preference and the look you are going for.

Making a Cute Container for your Cabbage Roses

You will be able to display these beautiful cabbage roses in any way you like. There are tons of options. In the video below I give you an example of how to make a cute holder for your roses. All you really need is a quart sized mason jar and some chalk paint.

I used an off white color that I love and a chip brush to paint my jar. Chalk paint gives great coverage so one coat will do it. Then, when it was dry I used some brown paint and dry brushed it over the surface to age and distress the jar.

Next I used a piece of ribbon and tied it around a bunch of raffia. I tied a few skeleton keys into the bow too. Then wrap your raffia around the rim of the jar and tie it. After that, I just added my cabbage rose and I was done!

Prepping for Cabbage Roses Supply List

  • Brown paper bags
  • RIT or Tulip Dye in red and green (the RIT will give you bolder colors while the tulip dye will give you more muted tones)
  • Water
  • Large bowl
  • Baking sheets

Prepping for Cabbage Roses Instructions

  • Pre heat your oven to 250 degrees F
  • Start by following the package instructions to get your dye ready in a large bowl. Then dip your bags one at a time into the color. Let the soak up some color and take them out when they are the shade you like. Then allow the excess to drip back into the bowl and then place your bag on a baking sheet.
  • Once you have a full tray, put it in the oven to bake until dry. You will want to check them occasionally and rotate them to make sure they are drying evenly. I baked mine for about 40 minutes total and then moved them to a drop cloth on my table to finish drying. You just want to make sure that they are completely dry before making your roses.

How to Make Paper Cabbage Roses Supply List

  • Your dyed bags
  • Twine, raffia, or another similar string
  • Pretty embellishments like skeleton keys
  • Glue gun

How to Make Paper Cabbage Roses Instructions

  • Working one at a time, insert 4 red bags inside one green bag.
  • Then start working with the green bag. Rip it in a few places as you roll the bag down about half way. With one petal at a time, roll and scrunch it until it holds a scrunched shape.
  • Next, repeat the same process on each red bag, working your way towards the center. When you are done, scrunch the center bag a bit to make the center of your rose.
  • Then grab your bags under your flower and twist as hard as you can to form a stem with the bases of your bags. Then fluff, shape, and form your rose into the shape you like it.
  • Finally, tie the twine around the base of you flower to keep it in place.
  • Then add little dots of hot glue through your stem to make sure that the bags stay in place.

The Wrap Up

And that’s it! Some fun with color, a little paper ripping, and you have some big and beautiful cabbage roses! You can change up the color and the container to suit your own taste. But now you know the method I used to make mine.

However you decide to go about these fun flowers, I hope you love them. They make great Mother’s Day gifts. Or are perfect to take along as a hostess gift. I have found that people really apricate the love and time that goes into making handmade gifts. Happy crafting, friends!

How to Make Plaster Roses

April 19, 2022 by

I have a really simple and beautiful project for you today! I am showing you how to make plaster roses that are perfect for your indoor or outdoor decor. These beauties add a vintage feel to any area of your home!

It’s no secret that I love using vintage items in my decor. The real deal is my absolute favorite! But I am always on the look out for craft projects that look aged so that I can mix them in with my actual vintage items. In the video below I am showing you how to make plaster roses and these flowers really lend that aged look to our displays. They are easy to make and beautiful to display!

How to Make Plaster Roses

I won’t lie to you, these plaster roses are little messy to make. But the mess stays contained to a very small area so I don’t want it to deter you! A protective layer on your work surface and some gloves are all you need to keep the mess under control.

And the results are so fabulous, I never mind playing with a little mortar! I show you how it’s done in the video below. And I also added in the step by step instructions for you. As well as some tips and tricks I learned along the way so you don’t have to make the same goofs I did.

And wait, there’s more! There is also a cute little bonus tutorial. I teach you how to make Spanish moss nests that add so much cute to your spring and year round decor!

Plaster Rose Supply List

  • Faux roses
  • 1 cup white mortar mix
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Protective gloves
  • Large chip brush

Plaster Rose Instructions

  • Add your mortar mix and water in a container and mix well to combine.
  • Then use the chip brush to work the plaster over the rose, making sure to work it into each part of the flower. I use my gloved finger to push the mortar down into all the nooks and crannies.
  • Once the rose is covered, hang it to dry.

Plaster Roses Tips and Tricks

When I first tried this project I wanted to cover the whole flower with mortar. I coated the stem and leaves but once the mortar cured, it just flaked off. The plastic in those parts just repels the mortar. You can paint the leaves and stem a color that is similar to your mortar.

But that can be tricky too since a matte finished paint that will match the mortar may also be repelled by the plastic. What I have started doing is just cutting those pieces off and sticking with the bloom itself.

You can use any color of rose that you have on hand. But if you are going out to buy them, I would choose lighter colored blooms. It can be hard to cover all of the color of a dark rose with the mortar.

As you will see in the video, I used red. There were spots here and there where the color came through. So I just covered those spots with paint. But if you have a choice, it is easier to just start with light roses.

My last tip to share is that it is best to do your clean up outside. The mortar can easily damage your drains, even when diluted by water. So I take any tools I use outside and shoot them with the garden hose. The clean up really isn’t bad. Especially if you get to it right away.

How to Dry your Plaster Roses

You can dry your roses any way that works best for you. But I will share the way I do it with you because I think it works well. I just take a bucket and line it with a bag. Then I lay a dowel across the rim of the bucket.

Next, tie a piece of string to the stem of the flower. I like to find a little leaf node to hang my string around. Finally, tie the other side of the string to the dowel and let your plaster rose hang down into the lined bucket.

Bonus Tutorial: Spanish Moss Nests Supply List

  • Aluminum foil
  • Spanish Moss
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors

Spanish Moss Nests Instructions

  • Take a piece foil larger than you want your nest. Fold it in half and then start to form the shape of nest.
  • Then pull apart small sections of the Spanish moss and hot glue them to your foil. Work your way around the top and bottom of the nest adding more moss where you need it. Use your scissors to trim any spots you need to as you go.
  • Next you can add any other fun things to your nest base that you want to! Twigs, string, you name it. Anything you want to get your nest ready for decorating or display. I added some vintage pearls to mine and loved the way it looked!

The Wrap Up

And that’s it, friends! Two fun projects for you to try. I really love the way the roses turned out. And I keep mine the mortar shade because that’s what I love. But you can do anything with your flowers! You can paint them any color you like once the mortar is cured. And you can do this with many different types of flowers! Have fun playing around with different ideas and see what you like best.

And one of my favorite things about these plaster roses is that you can use them outside as well as in! I love using mine outdoors most of the year. I do bring them in for the winter. But as long as the container you have them in is waterproof, you can definitely display them outside!

I hope you love these projects as much as I do. Happy crafting, friends!
