I have a super cute fall craft project so share with you today! I am showing you how to make twine pumpkins that are the perfect addition to your fall decor.
I know it is a little early for some of you to be thinking about fall. But for those in our crafting community who do craft shows and sell online, this is prime fall crafting time. I wanted to share this project with you today so that you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy learning how to make twine pumpkins!
All you really need for this project is some twine, floral wire, and your hot glue gun. It’s quick, easy, and oh so adorable! These pumpkins are perfect for vintage, rustic, or farmhouse decor. And they can be customized to suit your exact tastes. So, let’s get crafting!
How to Make Twine Pumpkins
I have made a ton of different kinds of pumpkins over the years. I love them all and I never get tired of making them. There is just something about fall decor that makes me so happy. I originally shared this project a few years ago in my membership group.
I thought enough time had passes since then that the gals wouldn’t mind me sharing it with you now. Because they are just too cute not to share! These little cuties only take a few minutes to make and they look so great tucked into your fall decor.
And, as you can see from the pictures, you can make them in different sizes! They look cute with the different sizes displayed together. Or you can decide on the size you like and display them in groups of three where they fit best.
In the instructions below, I explain how I made my pumpkins the shape and size that they are. But you can absolutely play around with them and see what you like best!
Pumpkin Stem Ideas
For the twine pumpkins that I made I used actual pumpkin stems as the toppers. What I try and do every year is save my pumpkin stems. I just lay them out on top of my fall storage bins and let them dry for months and months.
Then, when it’s time to start crafting for fall again, they are ready to go! My mom and some friends save theirs for me. And I also keep an eye out at the grocery store and farmers market and grab little pumpkins with stems I think look neat.
But you don’t have to use real pumpkin stems!! There are lots of other options that you can try. Sticks work great and lend to the rustic look of the twine. And you can also use any of your favorite vintage items.
An old knob or a spindle would be cute. You can use absolutely anything, really! And if you want the look of the real deal but don’t have them on hand, you can actually purchase dried and fake pumpkin stems online. So you have tons of options!
How to Dress up Your Twine Pumpkins
Once you have your pumpkin “stems” attached your twine pumpkins are ready for display! But you can also take them a step further and dress them up a bit. There are a million different ways that you can do this.
How much you fancy them up and what you use will depend on what your decor tastes are. And what you have on hand. Here are a few ways that I have added to these and other pumpkins that I have made…
- Add moss to the top of the pumpkin around the stem. You can use Spanish moss or any other moss that you like.
- Tie a cute little bow around the base of your stem. Use pretty ribbon or a piece of vintage lace. You could also use a muslin shred. You know how much I love those!
- Attach little vintage treasures around the stem. Buttons, small pieces of jewelry, a skeleton key tied on with your ribbon. You can use any fun little items to add more texture, depth, and beauty to your pumpkins!
How to Make Twine Pumpkins Supply List
- Twine (medium thickness)
- Wire or floral cutters
- Floral wire
- Hot glue gun
- Your choice of “stem” (old stems, sticks, vintage items, etc…)
How to Make Twine Pumpkins Instructions
- Start by wrapping the twine around all four fingers of one hand 15 times. Then cut the end of the twine. Give or take 15 times, it doesn’t have to be exact. But I played around with it a lot and when I added too many wraps it didn’t do as well. So just don’t over do it.
- Then take a small piece of wire and put it through the center of your twine wrap. Twist the wire to secure the twine and then snip off any excess wire.
- Next, repeat the same process to create a second bundle of twine.
- Then use the glue gun to glue the two sections together. The floral wire of both sections should be facing up. Apply the glue to the top area of the sections and then hold them together for a few seconds while they adhere.
- Next, make two more bundles and glue them together just like you did before. Then glue your two sections together.
- If your pumpkin looks full enough you can stop adding twine here. But if you want it a little more full, you can make another bundle and glue that to your original four. I ended up with 5 bundles in this pumpkin.
- Then fluff and arrange your the twine into a cute little circle. You pumpkin base is done!
- Finally, use the hot glue to attach a pumpkin stem to the top.
