Do you make a New Year’s resolution? Do you make a list of things you want to accomplish in the coming year? Do you feel like you succeed, or do you fall short of those goals? Does it make you feel like you want to toss the whole idea of resolutions altogether? Well, you’re not alone! Far from it.
I wonder how many of us make New Year’s resolutions, and by February we have trouble remembering what we resolved to do. I imagine there are more of us in that boat than we think. Even if we can remember our resolutions, have we put them into motions, or are we putting them off until later?
This year, I propose we resolve to be more. More, you ask? More what?
I mean more. Remember that slogan the US Army had- “Be All That You Can Be”? That’s what I’m talking about. You can strive to be thinner, healthier, wealthier, happier, etc. You can be specific about what you resolve, like “I’m going to lose 20 pounds,” or you can simply resolve to be more.
Think about your life. Do you wish to improve some aspect of it? Instead of being specific, focus on simply being more. Strive to be more in everything you do. See more, hear more, love more, live more, be more. Whatever it is that you wish for yourself, make a goal to be more of the kind of person that succeeds. It doesn’t matter what specific thing you’re trying to achieve, or get over- just strive to be more of the person that achieves that goal. Perhaps you’re trying to quit smoking; be more of the person who has the strength and determination to do it. Want to end a toxic relationship? Set your sights on being more of the person who takes charge, and steers away from negativity. You can be more of anything you choose. You don’t have to give yourself a label, a specific date on the calendar, or a set amount of time. Just resolve to be more; more of anything and everything that will get you to a place where you are truly happy, or at least in a happier place than you were. Life happens to us every day if we’re lucky. Changes occur and bring new experiences, some good and some bad. We can get upset and lose our temper, cheat on our diet, smoke, drink, etc.-whatever we’re trying so hard to do or not do. The truth is life is going to happen regardless of what our resolution happens to be, and if we just realize this, and not let it be the end of the world, we will sail through. By resolving to be more of the type of person who makes lemonade from lemons, and adopts a positive attitude toward whatever the future holds, we allow ourselves to eventually become a better, happier person. And come February, you won’t be one of those people who gave up on their New Year’s resolution or forgot it altogether. By this time next year, and the year after that, and so on, and so on, you’ll succeed at being more of everything you strive to be, and enjoying life and all that it brings.
Be more!
Happy New Year to all of you!
