Did you make a New Year’s resolution? If so, are you still following it?
I always say for my New Year’s resolution that I will be a better person than I was the past year. To me, that seems attainable. I can always better myself in some way; be more kind, loving, understanding, considerate, determined.
Ah, now there’s a goal…to be more determined. How many of us accomplish every little thing we want to get done each day? And even if we could do that every single day of the year, would we feel satisfied? I’m guessing not. Because even though we do all that we can, and more, sometimes we’re left feeling like it somehow wasn’t enough. Still, we’re determined to “get it done” or “finish it up.”
The key is not in what lies at the end of the day, it’s what we make of the whole day. You’ve heard he phrase, “it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.” Don’t dwell on the final outcome, instead enjoy the whole process! I find when I do that, I am actually more aware of what I’m doing as I’m doing it, and I pause to take it all in…whether I’m shopping with a friend, painting with my team, or enjoying one of my class nights, it makes me appreciate the moment more when I’m aware of how I feel right then. It makes the moment more special, and a more distinctive part of my day. I don’t simply shop to get it done, or work to see it finished, or teaching a class for it to be over. I stop and savor the experience while I’m in the midst of it.
As you think of tomorrow, don’t put all your focus on one specific ending. Instead, plan a course, imagine it going wonderfully, then let go. Enjoy all the comes to you in the meantime. You really do need to stop and smell the roses. Heck, you need to stop and PICK some! Share them with friends! Decorate with them! You get what I’m telling you. Make everyday have a purpose, but include lots of time to enjoy that purpose as it unfolds. We only get one chance to live today. Make it memorable!
Oh by the way, my New Year’s resolution is to be more determined to enjoy each day, and all that it brings.
